Best Practices For Summer Home Security

Technically, Summer starts on June 21, but many of us are already hitting the roads and skies to enjoy that sweet, sweet PTO we’ve been waiting for all year.  Do you know what really ruins that sacred time off?  Wondering if you left those lights on, or that faucet dripping, or if the house is adequately secured from possible burglars.  Here are some home security tips for peace of mind this summer.

Install A Home Security System

If you don’t already have one, installing a home security system is one of the best ways to ensure your home is protected while you’re away.  We tailor-make each home security system to work with your home size and budget.  From comprehensive fire, carbon monoxide, and motion detection suite of sensors to camera systems and remote access control (wireless locks and smart garage door openers), we’ll work with you to find the perfect solution for your home.

Smart Lighting Works Wonders

Equipping your home with a smart lighting solution is a great way to deter possible burglars.  One of the dead giveaways of an unoccupied home is multiple days of lights off.  Setting an independent lighting routine lets you leave town without worrying about whether or not you did, in fact, leave the lights on.  Let the lights take care of themselves.

Enlist The Help Of Friends

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of canceling your mail, turning off the water, unplugging appliances, etc., get a friend or neighbor to check in on the house while you’re away.  It’s also important to be careful with spare keys.  Entrusting them to a neighbor is good, but it’s best to avoid leaving them hidden around the property.  While you may think it’s safe on the top of the doorframe or in the fake rock, those are typically the first places checked.  If you must leave a key on the exterior of your home, we recommend a mounted, coded lockbox.  Or, even better, why use keys at all when we can get you set up with wireless locks!  If you’re away, you can let a house-sitter or neighbor in from your phone!
