The smart home is great for many reasons: they save energy, make your home more secure, and offer loads of entertainment perks. However, the smart home comes with the challenge of navigating many different apps that cannot interact with each other. As a result, the smart home as a whole is still developing. But not for long.
At CES 2022, the most influential tech event in the world where companies showcase ground-breaking technological developments, a major star of the show was Matter. Matter, originally nicknamed CHIP, is an alliance of technology companies aiming to simplify smart home operations. Its goal is to increase compatibility among devices and accelerate the development of a unified smart home market. So far, there are over 220 companies that have pledged their commitment to the matter alliance, with some key players being Amazon, Apple, Google, and Samsung. There are over 100 unique products predicted to be among the first launch of Matter around the second quarter of 2022.
How is Matter Going to Make Your Home Smarter?
In short, the big appeal of Matter is that a single application controls your home. Not only will this free up space and clutter on your phone, but you’ll also no longer have to frantically jump between apps just to leave your house and go to the store. Instead, you’ll be able to control your smart lights, security system, vacuum, TV, and more from one single app. Appealing, right? This simplified user experience will make smart home technology more consumer-friendly.
At launch, Matter is expected to support lighting products, door locks, thermostats and HVAC controllers, blinds, shades, home security sensors, garage door controllers, wireless access points and bridges, and televisions and streaming platforms. Its expected Matter will support home applications, energy management products, and security cameras in future updates.
